When I was a student nurse I did an agency shift in a nursing home, where I had the following conversation:
Care assistant: "So, I understand you're training to be a doctor?"
Me: "No, I'm training to be a nurse."
Care assistant: "A male nurse?"
Me (sarcastically): "No, a FEMALE one! The operation is next week!"
I recall a similar conversation.
Old Lady: "You're going to be a great, famous doctor one day,"
Me: "It's nice of you to say, but I'm actually training to be a nurse,"
Old Lady: "No! A doctor. You'll be a great doctor,"
Wonders never cease.
Yep, seems to be a common theme. When my wife (who worked in catering) was asked what I did and she replied HE's a nurse, the next question was always "What, a male nurse?
